PARRAMATTA TAPESTRY

In 2022 I was commissioned to design tapestry for the Walker building, 6 Parramatta Square. The intention was to convey the luminous landscape as viewed by the Burramattagal people for thousands of years.

Therefore I wanted the tapestry to possess a dreamlike quality, reflecting the natural beauty and pure light off the Parramatta river landscape, looking west towards the Blue Mountains.

Incorporating 171 colours, the tapestry was woven in fine merino wool by 13 of the country’s best weavers at the Australian Tapestry Workshop in Melbourne.

At 11.5m wide x 7m high, its considerable size necessitated its being woven on 2 looms, presenting challenges inits execution.

The tapestry took 18 months to complete and is only second  in size to the one in Parliament House in Canberra.
